Multi material (hybrid) structures are likely to offer an optimised solution for cost effective weight reduction for near future vehicles. To get an optimised solution we need to be able to model many materials (including carbon fibre composites) and loadings. Current approaches optimise crash and structural performance and then review durability and NVH. This leads to non-optimised solutions.
With the use of multi materials we can maximise the potential of each material and component in a structure - if we can model each of these simultaneously. This programme will develop a modelling technique that will define the structural performance required, and then identify the combination of materials required to meet targets.
The consortium consists of 5 projects partners - Jaguar Landrover (JLR), TWI, HPL Prototypes, ASDEC, and Far-UK.
