Case Study: HiLite
Following on from the successful HiLite project Far is working to develop a low cost moulding compound which can be produced at the point of use, to avoid the inventory of any expensive semi-finished materials. The technology is based around chopping carbon fibre roving into discrete lengths (approximate 25 – 50mm long) then mixing and b-staging in an extruder like machine which deposits the compound onto a tool skin immediately prior to compression moulding a part. The technology is capable of a 2-minute TAKT time with exceptionally low £/kg material cost and good mechanical properties. Combining this technology with continuous fibre can yield very high mechanical properties at a competitive cost.
